What do people buy on the
Internet?
Computer Products
The two biggest sellers online
are almost always computer related:
Computer hardware and computer
software. The people who shop
online are going to be, on average,
more technically savvy than
your average non-computer user.
They are a diverse group of
people who have but one thing
in common: their computers.
So it should make sense that
computer-related products are
going to be big sellers.

Small-Ticket Items
Buying things online is pretty
new for most people, and as
such there still remain many
questions in many minds. Horror
stories of Internet fraud are
lodged prominently in the collective
subconscious of the digital
world. Because of this, most
online shoppers are still hesitant
about handing over large sums
of money for certain big-ticket
items.
According to a study by the
Boston Consulting Group, 60%
of consumers have "significant
concerns that someone will misuse
the personal information they
provide online." Added
to this is the fact that the
consumers with these fears must
now buy items sight unseen.
One focus group mentioned in
the book E-Service by Ron Zemke
and Tom Connellan was filled
entirely with people unwilling
to spend any more than a couple
hundred dollars
Travel
The one glaring exception
to the small-ticket trend is
travel, which rebounded from
an early autumn sales dip to
take in $35 million from 167,000
consumers. It is becoming more
and more common for people to
purchase airline tickets and
make hotel reservations online.
If you are talking
revenue, travel is #1
in revenue, but the competition
is very tough.
Books & CDs
Millions of books, CDs, and
movies, are selling online
through shops such as Amazon and Barnes
and Noble. Music, books, and
movies represent a huge portion
of online sales.
Office Supplies
Office supplies are available
online, and peak normally on
back-to- school sales. Toys
and sporting goods are other
popular small-ticket items,
combining for over $1 billion
in sales annually.

product is best to sell

If you want to start selling
things on the Internet, DON'T
start with a top five product;
the competition is WAY too big!
Hot Products Aren't Such Hot
Ideas
The best, easiest, cheapest,
and often the most productive
thing to sell on the Internet
is information.
"The profitable companies
are the ones with a well-defined
niche that didn't have to go out and
spend millions to get customers
to come to them," ActivMedia director
of research Harry Wolhandler
told the E-Commerce Times.

What you must do: nearly
anything can be sold over
the Internet, but before
you start, be sure that your
product or services are relevant
and may benefit from Internet
marketing.
