Search engine optimization (SEO)
Introduction
Search
engine optimization (SEO) is
the only “free” way to get traffic
over the internet – if you “do
it right.” When a user opens
a search engine and enters a
search term e.g. “best software,”
the search engine, for example
“Google,” uses a highly complicated
and secret algorithm to try
to best match the list of websites
that best describes or answers
the search criteria.
This
is the key to get free traffic
from your search engine, but
in order to achieve the task
you must convince the search
engine that you site best matches
the user search criteria and
it is more correct to list your
website before your competitors’
sites.
Page
Rank (PR)
The
first thing you must understand
is PR or page rank. Google measure
your website from a series of
aspects and gives it a score.
This score is called page rank
(PR); it is the basic parameters
to evaluate your website. The
range of the page rank is 0-10,
the higher the page rank the
better. This value does not
relate to a specific key word
but rather measures the basic
guidelines upon your website
were building.
TIP
The
range of 1-10 on Google is not
linear. It is exponential in
nature, believed to be a base
of 6 to 7, that is, PR 7 website
is 6 times more important than
PR 6 website.
Among
the value Google checks in order
to determine the PR are:
1. The
type of webpage: Google prefer
static pages (HTML) rather then
dynamically generated
(ASP,PHP)
2. Amount
of text on the website: Google
prefer pages with text, the
more the better
3. Graphics:
Google prefer pages with minimum
graphics.
4. Flash
and Advanced UI: Google prefer
pages with fewer graphical elements
5. Inbound
links: The number of links inside
the page, the more the better
To view
the PR of your site, you will

Understanding how Google determine the
relevancy of websites

Determining
the relevancy factor
To determine
if a certain page is relevant
to specific search criteria,
Google looks for the following
inside the website.
1. Keyword
density
If,
for example, the user searched
for “used cars,” Google analyzes
the website and determines how
many times the phrase “used
cars” appears in the text of
the website in relation to the
entire text of the website.

2. Link
popularity
Google
tries to find out how many relevant
websites link to the specific
website. The basic idea begin
the popularity check is that
if there are many links to a
certain webpage, it is considered
more valuable. It is important
to link as many websites to
your site as you can.
